Wellness Wednesday - Expanding Your Happiness

If you've followed the blog for a while you know I am all about learning more about meditation as a tool to support a balanced life. Well, it's about that time again for another meditation challenge. Same format, totally free, and done by Oprah and Deepak Chopra, it's 21-days of potentially life changing goodness.

Meditation can have many benefits depending on each person. Some benefits you typically hear about include:
  • Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations
  • Building skills to manage your stress
  • Increasing self-awareness
  • Focusing on the present
  • Reducing negative emotions
Along with these benefits I found there are many ways you can incorporate meditation in your day.
  • Participating in yoga or tai chi (take a class or buy a good video to do at home - if you can't afford to buy a video check your local library. Our local library system has DVD's and CD's available and you can test them to see what you like before you spend any money.)
  • Practicing relaxed breathing (taking slow deep breaths in and out can help you calm down when you're stuck in rush hour traffic or when you can't get away for a full meditation)
  • There are many guided meditation options available online or on CD (probably not something you want to do in the car but you could make it a part of your morning or evening routine)
  • Many people even recommend a walking meditation where you focus on a mantra, through, or your breathing while you're walking (this is a great option if you're looking to use walking to get or stay in shape)

** The benefits and types of meditation with additional information were found here.

I am personally excited to start this meditation challenge. Happiness is something I want to focus on having more of in my life so don't be surprised if you see some insights and thoughts from this process in the future. If you're interested in giving this a try sign up today and let me know in the comments that you're participating. I'd love to stay in touch with people who have joined in!

Do you make meditation a part of your daily routine? How did you start meditation and what difference has it made in your life? Do you have any favorite guided meditations or routines you use. Share any tips you have for first time or beginners to meditation in the comments.
